Fazlani Residence: A Contemporary Luxury Home with Modern Islamic Interiors

Inspired by the prominent mosques in the vicinity, the design team sought to create a modern interpretation of Islamic interiors. The result is an experiential design idiom that seamlessly combines the old and the new. The drawing room features an imposing ceiling feature created by the juxtaposition of octagons. A bay window seating area, flanking the dining room, is enveloped in a hand-carved wooden lattice arch.

The majlis room, a space for social gatherings, is characterized by a hand-stitched fabric ceiling and low seating sofas punctuated with mirrored armrests and wall-mounted lattice screens. The master washroom is a composition in gold, with glass mosaic tiles on the ceiling and floor, and a hand-cut artistic mosaic installation in swirls on a curved wall.

The realization of this design involved the use of various techniques and materials. Handcrafted wooden lattice/jaali arches and screens were incorporated to allow the soft permeation of light. Elaborate metalwork in brass and stainless steel, rendered in gold, was integrated into the furniture pieces. Artisanal leather walls in the drawing room and master bedroom were meticulously handcrafted.

Technical specifications of the design include a bespoke 3600mm long by 900mm wide chandelier with a brass base and hanging machine-cut silvery crystals, flush-mounted to the ceiling in undulating waves. The dining room boasts a 5250mm long 16-seater dining table crafted from solid Botanic Green granite.

The Fazlani Residence, completed in November 2018, showcases the fusion of contemporary design and Islamic influences. The project required extensive research into Islamic culture and design elements, resulting in a truly unique and enriching experience for the design team.

Despite the challenges posed by the highly humid climate of Mumbai, the design team overcame obstacles in the execution of metalwork, leather, and gold mirrors. Protective coats were applied to the metalwork and leather, while the gold mirrors were replaced with gold acrylic.

The Fazlani Residence is a testament to the creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skills of Priyanka Puri. This exceptional design has been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2019. The award acknowledges designs that incorporate best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
